I’m Kelsie, a wife & mom to 2 and I LOVE home decor. Add some functionality and storage solutions to that, and that’s my passion for home decor on this blog! Creating functionality and finding your style is so crucial in making your house feel like home.
And if you’re new here, no, I don’t own a super cute Pinterest home. In fact, I haven’t ever owned a home, so I have found so many renter-friendly decorating tips and storage hacks to share with you!
My boys’ playroom went viral years ago, and to this day I am forever grateful because I love home decor & curating content, helping clients with decorating, etc. It is such a fun outlet for me!
Little Girls Playroom
When it comes to a playroom for little girls, I am often thinking of light furniture, and incorporating a cute, wooden dollhouse as part of a furniture piece + large toy.
Here is my checklist when it comes to creating FUNctional toy room for kids.
Playroom Checklist
1. Storage Solutions
Why is this at the top? Well, if you’re anything like me, clutter can overwhelm me so easily. Incorporating storage solutions into your play area is crucial.
Will you have crafting supplies in your playroom?
Is there a place to store books?
Is there storage that allows you to display some toys to encourage play?
Do you have an assigned “home” for each toy?
Many people ask me, “Kelsie, what is the best storage for a playroom?”
Honestly, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer. And since my first playroom over 2.5 years ago, my playroom storage has changed and evolved.
I’ve had designated playrooms. I’ve had shared living room/play areas, and most recently, I’ve a stair closet as a “toy storage” room.
In all the houses I’ve lived in, I’ve had to change things up, and find storage solutions that work for the specific house I live in.
Here’s what I would do when looking at playroom storage furniture:
Does this piece of furniture make it easy and clear where to put toys away?
If it doesn’t, can you add labels with illustrations so little ones can see where the airplanes “home” is?
2. FUNctionality- A Place to PLAY
Most playrooms need some time of climbing/fort building toys, such as a modular couch for kids, or large blocks. We don’t want the playroom lined with shelves upon shelves, without those FUN elements! Just a good sized area where children can build with Legos, train tracks, “house” with baby dolls, and more.
3. A Place to Read + Learn
Do you have a little corner, beanbag, bookshelf, etc in a place where your child could pick up a book and sit on a cozy rug or chair to read?
4. A Place to Build + Create
Often this looks like a play table. This can be used for crafting, coloring, and more, to building blocks, stacking toys, etc. that require a solid flat surface. A kids table is also a great place to introduce puzzles, learning activities, and children’s games. It can be SO much easier for toddlers to create, craft, build, and play games on a chair and at a table that fits them!
