Organizing kids closet

I’ve had people ask me about Hudson’s room and I am so bummed it’s not completely finished yet! (As in decorated!) Things have been so busy for us lately. I am doing one project a week, because right now, that’s all the time and energy I got! But sometimes I do feel like I am recircling. Anyone relate?! Ha

Yikes!! Looks like we were struck by a recent move and toddler! Ha

This past week was Hudson’s closet. Prior to what you see here, it was a big mess of storage. We’ve been able to move things around alot and have gotten alot of progress. So I am excited to share that I have finally organized ALL his clothes. In one spot. And it looks Good!!

I needed to do his closet on a budget of $20. Do you know how much stuff costs these days?! Man I underestimated. I spent $20 on just hangers! I didn’t buy anything for his organization this week. Just hangers.

It’s great though. Simple, on budget, and does the job. I really wanted it to be SIMPLE. Why? Because I want it so simple that my husband could put away shoes or something and know exactly where to put them because its so simple. The goal is that soon Hudson will understand “Can you go put your shoes away?” And easily do that. So Simple and Sleek. That’s what his closet is. AND, it was done a tight budget! Since those darn hangers costed my whole budget.

I do have to plug in right here- still do your budgets for your home decor, upkeep, and organization! Its so rewarding. It is really helpful for my husband so he knows that I have a set, planned project each each/month, etc, and an estimate as to how much it would cost.

I found his dresser facebook marketplace the week we moved into our apartment in a neighboring city. I got it for $60. It was in near-perfect shape and with my toddler I wouldn’t be surprised if it has “art” all over it soon. 🙂

Anyone who knows me knows my obsession with bins!!! (go check out Hobby Lobby’s spring bins!! You’ll fall in love and leave broke! 🙂

These are bins I already had in random places and storage, so I gathered up the ones that were a close match and we went for it.

I found a small trick for folding all his drawers. I found an empty rubbermaid that was similar in size to his drawers, and I folded all his clothes in it, and then transferred them to the drawers. This saved me time, because hovering over the drawers would just invite a curious toddler to pull everything out. He’s obsessed with this new talent of his right now! So I could fold on the couch while he watched a show, or fold the clothes on my bed, and I would have one drawer at a time, in this clear rubbermaid. I could even stop and put the lid on to keep him out if needed.

This method worked so good! (Yes I wear crocs. Everyday. All day)

It was perfect, and Hudson didn’t notice me transferring the clothes to his drawers, so I was able to get it all done.

Everything hung up on the hangers are shirts, suits, rompers, jackets, etc. The drawers hold his socks, onesies, jeans, and pants. It’s been a great system for us.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a decorated house. But the VERY top of my list is a functional house first. So it seems with every organizing project it moves to the next one. But that’s okay! 🙂

If organizing might scare you, its okay, it does me too. That’s why I only do smaller projects more often to keep it up. Here’s a tip: Don’t buy your bins until you’ve organized. Until you know what you’re keeping and what you’ve already donated. Then you won’t be buying endless bins for clutter. Buy bins with a purpose.

Ta Da! Looking like he’s ready to explore his new closet. And ruin it? 🙂

How do you organize your kids’ drawers and closets? Any other ideas and hacks I should know?

XOXO,

Kelsie Ann <3
