The final product! Our Transportation themed playroom

The day is finally here! For months I have planned my “vision” of what I wanted this room to become. Over the last month, I have had furniture and other items delivered. My husband and I spent late nights putting furniture together and kept this playroom a surprise from our 22-month-old, Hudson.

If you’re looking for direct links, click HERE for my blog post full of links to get the look of this playroom! Some items are no longer available, but I will continue to update as they do become available!!

Although I pride myself as the “decorator” in the house, my husband has a good eye for design as well. He actually assists in most projects. I love that he is so willing to help and is passionate about how he wants things in his house. Even if we don’t always agree. He teases me that He is my “Chip” and that we even each other out like Chip and Joanna Gaines. I think he’s right 🙂 Together we put our ideas together and we really enjoyed working on a project together during those late nights after work.

As you all know, I am in the nesting phase of pregnancy and as the next two months come and go, I hope to have my house in order and ready for the baby to come!

My first main project on my list was a playroom. We decided to use our spare bedroom as a playroom so that we can have a safe, kid-friendly place for Hudson to play, and to tend to our new baby during the day as well.

We have put lots of time and money into it, as we want it to last a long time! Having another boy made it so fun for us to do a boy-themed playroom, and you know me, I love a good room redo!

This room was previously used as my craft room, and somehow became the “toss all random things” room. I made lots of wreaths here, and stored decorations and projects I was working on. After clearing everything out of the room, we were very selective on what crafting items I was allowed to keep. Definitely a downsize from an entire room!! However, I do think this is the best option for our family right now. More motivation to buy a home someday.

Can you see another project in the future? Craft closet organization. I will need all the tips and tricks to make it functional and work for my needs. It has been a little bittersweet to let go of the ability to make lots of wreaths. However, it was also freeing knowing that I have a limit on how many I make. This will allow me to really focus on my home, my blog, and most importantly my family and babies!

Blake and I had a specific list we wanted to accomplish with this playroom. Especially since I gave up all craft space! I wanted it as close to perfect as possible. I am a list-maker. This was my list of “must-haves” for this playroom. When I saw cute toys, or rugs, or Pinterest ideas, I had to make sure I was being realistic with my budget, space, and needs. Here was our list:

  1. Place for toys
  2. Place for reading & learning
  3. Place to be crazy (you know, jumping, climbing, wrestling)
  4. Place for Mom to tend baby (nurse, feed bottle, rock, play with baby)

I honestly think I was able to complete my list and fulfill the needs we have for our family.

Toy storage:

The first problem to solve, really, is toy storage! Where do all the toys go? How do we want the toys displayed? Etc.

I had some elaborate Pins on Pinterest, but I also had to be realistic in my current condo and with a budget! And let’s be honest, my toddler isn’t the kid who will keep everything in tip-top shape.

Right: toy storage shelf from Wal-mart for $55. Linked below!

This is why I went with this bin organizer that wouldn’t break the bank to replace bins etc. I also got these wooden shelves from Walmart! They were only $55 a piece and they sure do look great. Perfect for a toddler toy room 🙂

I used two wooden toy organizers from Walmart, and one extra large bin organizer. This bin organizer is on Amazon and ships pretty quick! Linked below.

This white bin organizer is on Amazon (and Walmart as well). Its a lot of bins, but I think it makes it really easy for Hudson to put toys away, and to keep pieces together. I like that you can see what is inside of the bins, hopefully less “dumping” bins everywhere! (as long as they are not full).

I am not a big fan of giant toy benches or bins, etc. I think that is in great part of my toddler’s current stage of dumping everything out. My hope is that if he can see the items in the bins, he will be a bit less likely to just dump out the bins first things. Only time will tell!

I chose to use Humble Crew Furniture throughout my playroom. I figured that if I am going to buy new furniture, I want it to match! Ha. I am impressed with the quality, and they were really easy and fast to put together.

Humble Crew also has replacement bins on Amazon! So that is helpful if you worry one might get broken.

I love this book display shelf. Hudson can easily select his books and put them back on his own, which helps him become more independent.

Reading area:

I think kids read books when they are right out in front of them! At least that’s what I have noticed with Hudson. If they are laying out where he can see what book it is, he will read it. Over and over again! So, I decided on a rotating book organizer that will work for him to have books that are age appropriate and have something to do with what he’s interested in or learning!

Hudson can easily put his books back, and he doesn’t get frustrated with books falling on a shelf. I like that he feels more independent, and he can easily see what book he wants to read.

If I had more room, I would have added a reading chair for him. However, I have the foam blocks (the climbing blocks) that I put next to his reading center, and you can configure them into a chair or lounge spot. This will work for our space right now!

This Book display organizer is great!! I bought the largest size. I would not get the smaller size. This one is smaller than I was expecting but is a great size overall. It’s not too tall, however at the same time I don’t want something too big and tall for him to try to climb. I selected this display organizer to match my Humble Crew furniture.

This table will probably be the most used furniture piece in the room.

Table and chairs:

Having a table and chair set was crucial for me! Hudson loves sitting up to the kitchen table just to watch his cars and trucks (the wheels!). So, buying a sturdy kid-proof table for him to play at was important. A large table in the center of the room just wasn’t feasible (anywhere, really) with the amount of space I had, so this small table will have to do. I would love to get a “train” table someday. But I would recommend that for a much larger playroom.

This table and chair set is SO cute! Hudson can climb right up and the table height is great. Many tables I looked at were just too tall for his toddler age. I can see this being great for the next 2-3 years.

We can also color, etc, at this table, but it will be limited and supervised. As much as I would love it to be free reign for his creativity, I am renting this condo and need to keep it nice! So crafting supplies will be stored up high out of reach, so we (hopefully!) don’t have any crafting catastrophes with markers or something! 🙂

A climbing area:

This little guy will find anything to climb on. My hope was that by having a space for him to climb, it might be more interesting to him than chairs and other furniture. Only time will tell. This set had tons of reviews on Amazon and I liked the colors, so I went with that. I like that they aren’t too hard and damaging to walls, trim, etc.

These foam climbing blocks are a big hit in our playroom!

My husband Blake, and Hudson have had a great deal of fun the last few days with this foam blocks, and so far, I am really impressed with them. I think they would slide on a wood floor but having them on the rug makes them not slide as much. These Tumble foam blocks were purchased on Amazon. I got them on Prime Day.

Road Rug:

I knew that I needed a play rug that would be something he would actually play at. I chose the center of the room to be empty, I wanted a large place to play, and I thought what better than a rug that he can play with.

I purchased the 5 x 8 size rug and it was a great size for our playroom. I recommend a rug pad! But with the rug pad it is just right.

A road rug is perfect for this stage of life our family is in! I searched high and low for the perfect rug. The one I had my eyes on forever sold out everywhere!! I am so sad about it! However, I found this one and I really liked how it matched the transportation theme, had vibrant colors, but that the colors of the rug were inviting and not overwhelming. Five stars for the rug.

I did have to buy a rug pad for this rug. The rug itself is very thin. However, this rug IS washable. I wanted the ultimate comfort as Hudson will spend plenty of time playing here. I went with the thickest pad I could find, and I am impressed with the comfort!! Totally worth it for me.

A Road rug will help facilitate independent play and maybe Hudson will like putting his cars and trucks on there a little less than my kitchen table and counters. 🙂

Nursery rocking chair. Rocking chair in playroom. Nursing station for mom & baby. Photo by Daisy Mae Decor.
This is my favorite piece of furniture in my entire house. You will always find me in this chair. This chair was given to me by a close friend, so I don’t have a link for it. But believe me I will never let this chair go!

Rocking Chair:

It might seem extra to have a rocking chair, but you will find in pictures in the next few months that little baby will be joining in the fun soon! So I wanted a place where I could rock and feed baby and still be in Hudson’s presence. This way I am not feeling like I am leaving Hudson, and there will hopefully be opportunities for them to play and become friends soon!

You will see in the corner with the rocking chair that there is a little organizer of the “baby” toys. Here I will rotate soft and age-appropriate toys for little man. I also have blankets, burp rags, diapers, wipes, and a thick mat so he can play or do tummy time on the rug as well.

My rocking chair is a hand-me-down from a good friend of mine. I love this chair and basically chose my colors based on my white rocking chair. It has a cover on it, so I just throw it in the wash when it needs it.

This chair is wide, and easy for a toddler to sit with me and read a book. It also has tall arms that make for holding a baby, feeding a bottle, etc. very helpful.

Now for the Reality of the “Perfect” Playroom:

Soon this playroom will look a little more cluttered. But all for good reasons! I will have a baby swing and other toys in here for little man too!

A perfect playroom. Hearing laughter and giggles from a little toddler and of course the trail of toys.

I am sure the blocks will never be in perfect order, and my husband and I have a running bet on how long the white table will last without some type of “artwork” added to it.

However, this room was designed and meant for play. It is meant for quality time. A perfect kid-friendly place with no television. A place for learning, love, and fun.

At the end of the day, having a place for all the toys will be so nice for us 🙂 I am excited to have a living room with less toys and books, and just more space.

I am also really thrilled to have a reading corner for Hudson to read on his own, or with Mom or Dad in the rocking chair. Reading is something that is really important in our family, and I hope that Hudson will continue to have interest in books and learning!

Update: I added this weekly routine chart and daily responsibility chart to his playroom as well. It was the perfect place for him to reference to it as needed and looked great in the space as well! Here’s the link to my post here.

Well, there you have it, that’s our toddler boy toy room reveal! Hope you enjoy it 🙂

XOXO, ‘

Kelsie Ann
